Two graduate degrees can lead you onto a school's student support team: a counseling master's focused on schools, and a Master of Social Work. They look interchangeable on a job board, yet they split in ways that steer the next ten years of a career.
The school counseling master's prepares you for a single role in a single kind of setting, the credentialed K-12 school counselor. The Master of Social Work is a generalist professional degree: it reaches into schools, healthcare, mental health and child welfare, and it is the degree behind clinical social work licensure. In a school building the two professions work side by side, but they are not the same profession.
The differences come down to who accredits each degree, how each license works, how many supervised hours each asks for, what federal wage data says about pay, and what changes when you study online.
Which Is Better, a Master's in School Counseling or an MSW?
A master's in school counseling is the better choice when K-12 counseling is the career you have settled on, and an MSW is the better choice when you want clinical work or a credential that reaches beyond schools. The counseling master's is the direct route: the coursework is organized around the job, and the practicum and internship typically take place in a K-12 school, which puts you in front of future colleagues and employers.1
The MSW travels further. It opens school social work, healthcare, community mental health and child welfare settings, and it is the degree behind the clinical social work license.82 It is also the safer bet if your certainty about schools came from a career quiz and not from time spent in one.
The trade is focus against scope. Narrowness helps when you know the job you want and hurts when you do not. Someone who finishes a school counseling program and later wants clinical work will need to check what their state's licensing board asks for beyond that degree, while someone who finishes an MSW and later wants a school job can apply for school social work positions, depending on the state with an additional credential.

What Will You Study in a Master's in School Counseling, and What in an MSW?
In a master's in school counseling you study counseling theory plus the design and delivery of a school counseling program, while in an MSW you study generalist social work practice followed by a specialization. The two programs start from different assumptions about what a student needs.
The Master's in School Counseling
CACREP's 2024 standards list what a school counseling specialty must teach: models of school counseling programs and of PK-12 career development, school-based collaboration and consultation, curriculum and lesson design, the counselor's role in crisis and management plans, and leadership and advocacy in schools.10 An entry-level program at a CACREP-accredited school requires at least 60 semester credit hours. The supervised practice is a practicum of at least 100 hours, including 40 or more hours of direct work with clients, followed by a 600-hour internship with at least 240 direct hours.10 For school counseling students, ASCA notes that licensure typically requires the practicum and internship to take place in a K-12 school.1
The Master of Social Work
MSW programs begin with generalist practice, which CSWE's standards ground in the person-in-environment framework: the idea that you cannot understand a student without also looking at the family, community and policy setting around them. The program then moves into specialized practice.11 CSWE's 2022 standards require at least 900 hours of field education for a master's program, against 400 for a bachelor's.11
Social work has a shortcut that counseling lacks. CSWE's standards require MSW programs to offer advanced standing to graduates of CSWE-accredited bachelor's programs, with a policy so that those students do not repeat generalist content.11 The CACREP standards have no comparable provision.10
Can You Earn a Master's in School Counseling or an MSW Online?
You can earn a master's in school counseling or an MSW online, and an accredited online program still includes supervised practice in a real school or agency. CSWE says all accredited social work programs meet the same standards, so if your state board requires a CSWE-accredited degree, it makes no difference whether you earned it online or on campus.6 CACREP's standards require counseling students to complete the practicum and internship with actual clients, so an online counseling student still needs a placement site within reach.10
We rank 57 fully online master's programs in school counseling, at 57 schools, on graduates and cost, and the median out-of-state tuition and fees among them is $14,904 a year.7 The online master's in school counseling rankings show each program's in-state and out-of-state figures. For the social work side, the ranking of online MSW programs covers CSWE-accredited options.
Because licensing follows the state where you will work and not the state where the school sits, check each program's own statement of whether it meets your state's requirements before you apply. Our licensure guides start from the student's home state for that reason.
How Do CACREP and CSWE Accreditation Differ for These Two Master's Degrees?
CACREP accredits counseling programs and CSWE accredits social work programs, and the two carry different weight because each state sets its own licensing rules. CSWE says licensure after the degree is under the authority of a designated board in each state, and the state decides whether to require a CSWE-accredited degree, a decision separate from accreditation itself.6 Verify a social work program's status with CSWE before you apply, and confirm the requirement with your state board.
For school counseling, the state sets the rules too. ASCA reports that requirements vary by state and that licensure typically calls for documented school counseling coursework from an accredited college or university, a practicum and internship in a K-12 school, and a passing score on a state or national exam such as the Praxis.1 CACREP accreditation can therefore matter more in some states than in others, so read your state's requirements first, and favor accredited master's programs where you have a choice. Where a choice exists, a CACREP-accredited program has the advantage of published standards: the credit and supervised-hour minimums above are fixed, which makes programs easier to compare.10
How Do You Get Licensed With a School Counseling Master's Versus an MSW?
Getting licensed with a master's in school counseling means earning a school counselor credential from your state, while getting licensed with an MSW means going through your state's social work board, and the clinical license adds supervised practice after the degree. The two degrees feed separate systems run by different agencies.
School Counseling: A Credential From the State
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a master's degree and a state-issued credential as the typical route for school and career counselors, with no work experience listed.9 Beyond the degree, ASCA says licensure typically includes the K-12 practicum and internship and a state or national exam.1 No multi-year supervision period is part of that typical route, so finishing the master's, passing the exam and holding the credential can follow in quick succession.
Social Work: A License From the State Board
The MSW leads to social work licensure, and the clinical license is the longer road. The Association of Social Work Boards compared supervision rules across 54 jurisdictions in 2019. Among the 47 that state the post-degree requirement in hours, it ran from 1,500 to 5,760, and 28 set 3,000 hours, the most common figure. Of the 44 jurisdictions that set a minimum period for earning those hours, 35 chose two years.2 Rules may have changed since that comparison, so check your own board.
The difference in timeline is the point. A school counseling master's can lead to a credential soon after the degree, while an MSW aimed at independent clinical practice adds at least a couple of years of supervised hours in most places. If independent clinical practice is not the goal, the counseling route reaches a full credential sooner.
What Jobs Can You Get With a Master's in School Counseling Versus an MSW?
A master's in school counseling qualifies you mainly to be a school counselor, while an MSW qualifies you for school social work and for social work in many other settings. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts school counselors inside the broader category of educational, guidance and career counselors and advisors, which also covers college advisors and career center staff.3
The social work side is split by specialty in the federal data: child, family and school social workers, healthcare social workers, and mental health and substance abuse social workers each have their own occupation.4512 Breadth is what the MSW has to offer, and it is why someone who wants the freedom to change settings without changing degrees leans toward it. Specialization is not a downgrade, though: a counselor with years in one building does skilled work that the MSW curriculum does not specifically train you to do.
On demand, ASCA recommends one school counselor for every 250 students, and the national figure for 2024-25 was 372 to 1.13 Ratios like that argue for hiring more counselors, but read them as background rather than a promise of openings.
Who Earns More, School Counselors or School Social Workers?
School counselors earn more than school social workers at the median, but healthcare social workers earn more than school counselors. School and career counselors have a national median of $64,330 across 353,310 jobs, with the 10th percentile at $45,020 and the 90th at $104,770.3 Because that category also includes college advisors and career center staff, it is a rough proxy for K-12 school counselors and not an exact one, and the school counselor salary page breaks it out by state.
Social work depends on specialty. Child, family and school social workers, the group school social workers fall into, have a median of $59,550 across 392,550 jobs.4 Healthcare social workers have $67,880 across 187,630 jobs,5 and mental health and substance abuse social workers $60,280 across 132,810.12 A school counselor therefore out-earns a school social worker by about $4,780 a year at the median, and a healthcare social worker out-earns the counselor by about $3,550. What the MSW buys you is the option to move to a better-paying setting without more schooling.
On outlook, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of school and career counselors to grow 3% from 2025 to 2035, with about 27,800 openings a year.9 It projects 6% growth for social workers overall, with about 69,100 openings a year.8 Social work is the larger and faster-growing field.
How Long Does a Master's in School Counseling Take Compared With an MSW?
A master's in school counseling at a CACREP-accredited program takes at least 60 semester credits and 700 supervised hours, an MSW takes at least 900 supervised hours, and how many calendar years either takes depends on the school and on whether you study full time or part time. The minimums sit in the accreditors' standards, so they are the safe comparison.
- Credits. CACREP sets the 60-credit minimum for entry-level counseling programs.10 CSWE's standards set field hours and competencies and no credit count, so MSW credit totals are a school-by-school choice.11
- Supervised hours. School counseling asks for 100 practicum hours plus a 600-hour internship,10 against 900 field hours for the MSW.11 The MSW requires more hours in placement.
- Advanced standing. Graduates of CSWE-accredited bachelor's programs can enter MSW programs with advanced standing.11 CACREP's standards have no comparable provision, so a psychology or education bachelor's does not shorten a counseling program on the accreditor's terms.10
- Time to the full credential. School counseling ends at certification. The MSW's clinical license adds supervised practice, and two years is the most common minimum period for earning the hours, set by 35 of the 44 jurisdictions that set one.2
Credit counts say little about cost, which varies far more by school than by degree type. Each ranked program's card on the online school counseling list shows its tuition and fees, and the MSW directory does the same for social work.
What Is the Difference Between a School Counselor and a School Social Worker?
School counselors and school social workers sit on the same student support team, though their work centers on different things. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says school counselors help students develop academic and social skills, present options for plans after graduation, and teach students and staff about topics such as bullying.9 School social workers work with teachers, parents and administrators on plans to improve academic performance and social development, and they meet with families about issues such as frequent absences.8 Exact duties differ from building to building.
The credentials differ too. A school counselor holds a state-issued credential on top of the master's.9 School social work credentials are set by each state and vary, and the school social worker career guide covers how that works. If you are choosing between these two jobs specifically, the counselor job pays slightly more at the median and its typical route has no post-degree supervision period, and the social work license can be taken to settings outside schools.349
How Do You Choose Between a Master's in School Counseling and an MSW?
You choose between a master's in school counseling and an MSW by answering four questions, and the answers usually settle it.
- Is therapy part of the job you imagine? Ongoing clinical treatment or a private practice points to the MSW, since school counseling training is built around school-based, developmental work.
- How certain are you about working in K-12? Time spent in schools and a clear wish for the job favor the counseling master's. If your certainty is thinner, the MSW keeps more options open.
- Do you already hold a bachelor's in social work? If it is from a CSWE-accredited program, advanced standing changes the cost math on the MSW,11 and it deserves a hard look before you start a 60-credit counseling program from scratch.
- What do your state's agencies require? Read the school counselor rules at your state education agency and the license rules at your social work board before committing any money.16
To keep weighing it, move on to the programs themselves. Compare accredited online master's in school counseling programs on cost and size, read the school counselor career guide to see what the job involves, and set both beside the online MSW rankings. Choose for the job you want to hold, not for whichever degree sounds more prestigious.
