An online master's in school counseling trains you to counsel students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, and it is a counseling degree rather than a teaching degree. The courses are delivered at a distance, and the supervised hours happen inside a school near your home.
Three questions separate one program from another. Is it accredited by CACREP, the counseling field's own accreditor? Does it meet the school counselor requirements of the state where you plan to work? And how does it find you a school to train in? The sections below take each in turn.

How We Rank
Every eligible program is scored out of 100. Each figure becomes a percentile against the 57 ranked programs, and the percentiles are weighted as below. The methodology page explains each choice.
- Degrees awarded: 50%. Master's degrees the program conferred in the latest reported year, counted up to 50. Past 50 a year a program is clearly established and more volume adds nothing.
- Out-of-state tuition and fees: 50%. The university's graduate tuition plus required fees for a full-time year, out-of-state rate, 2023-24. Lower cost scores higher.
Reading the cards. Degrees awarded is the program's own count for the latest year reported to IPEDS, counted up to 50 for the score. Each tuition figure on a school counseling card is the university's graduate charge for a full-time year, read from IPEDS Institutional Characteristics, 2023-24. It is not a per-credit price or an online-only rate, so ask the program for its own.

How Many Online Master's Programs in School Counseling Are There?
There are 63 fully online master's programs in school counseling, out of 402 on federal record, and 57 of them are ranked above. A program counts as fully online when the school's own description of it says the whole degree can be completed at a distance, in line with the federal definition of an exclusively distance education program. In school counseling, a required campus residency makes a program hybrid here, even when most of the coursework is online, while a student teaching or practicum placement near home does not.
What Does an Online Master's in School Counseling Cost?
An online master's in school counseling costs from $4,560 to $68,128 a year out of state in graduate tuition and required fees across the 57 ranked programs, with a median of $14,904. In state the median is $10,782. These are each university's annual graduate charge from IPEDS Institutional Characteristics, 2023-24 rather than a per-credit price or an online-only rate, so a school counseling program's own price page is the figure to plan on.
What Does an Online Master's in School Counseling Cover?
An online master's in school counseling covers the skills of counseling children and teenagers and the structure of a school's counseling program, with every course delivered at a distance. The University of Denver's online master's in school counseling lists courses such as Counseling Youth and Families, School Counselor Interventions, and Counseling for Trauma, Crisis and Grief, and it runs as one track with no concentrations. Fort Hays State University's online counseling program adds a course on the school counseling profession.
The American School Counselor Association says licensure typically requires counseling coursework from an accredited college, a K-12 practicum and internship, and a passing score on a state or national test.
How Long Does an Online Master's in School Counseling Take?
An online master's in school counseling takes about two to three years in the programs that publish a schedule, though the credit totals behind that pace differ. The University of Denver requires 90 quarter credit hours across 24 courses, which a full-time student can finish in as few as 22 months. Fort Hays State's 60-credit-hour program can be completed in two to three years.
Quarter and semester credits count differently, so compare courses and months, not raw totals. Field work also sets a floor under the calendar. CACREP requires the practicum to span a full academic term of at least eight weeks, and the internship begins only after the practicum is complete.
Does an Online Master's in School Counseling Lead to a School Counselor License?
An online master's in school counseling prepares you for a school counselor credential, not a teaching license, and the state where you work decides whether the degree qualifies you for it. The American School Counselor Association says school counselors are licensed and credentialed by the state or territory that employs them.
Those state terms include classroom experience. Texas dropped its two-year teaching requirement for the school counselor certificate when Senate Bill 798 took effect on September 1, 2023, while Nebraska's school counselor endorsement asks for a teaching certificate or 12 added semester hours of teacher education. The credential may also be called a certification, a license or an endorsement.
How Do Practicum and Internship Work in an Online Master's in School Counseling?
Practicum and internship in an online master's in school counseling happen in a school in or near your community while the coursework stays online. The University of Denver puts the total at 700 hours, a 100-hour practicum plus a 600-hour internship, and says it helps students identify placements.
The CACREP standards require at least 40 practicum hours and 240 internship hours of direct service with actual clients. Ask how a program confirms that a site can give you that much direct work. School hours are daytime hours, so a working student should ask how the program handles an internship that overlaps a job.
How Do State Authorization and Licensure Disclosures Work for Online Counseling Students?
State authorization and licensure disclosures for online counseling students work through a federal rule that makes the school say, state by state, whether its program meets licensure requirements. Under 34 CFR 668.43, the school lists the states where it has determined that the program does and does not meet them, and it owes an enrolled student written notice within 14 calendar days of finding a shortfall in that student's state.
NC-SARA, the interstate authorization agreement, says it does not address licensing board approval, so permission to enroll you is separate from your state's permission to license you. The University of Denver's state licensure information shows the format: a table of states and a reminder that students should confirm their own pathway.
What Costs Come With Online School Counselor Training Besides Tuition?
The costs that come with online school counselor training besides tuition are the credit total that turns a per-credit price into a bill, the fees, and the exam and application steps after the degree. Fort Hays State lists $374.7 per credit hour and an estimated degree total of about $22,482 for its 60 credits. The University of Denver's page names credit hours but no per-credit price, so request one in writing.
Annual graduate charges in IPEDS Institutional Characteristics describe a full-time year, which suits comparing schools better than budgeting part-time study. Your state agency can name its exam, such as the Praxis School Counselor test, and its fee.
What Jobs Does an Online Master's in School Counseling Lead To?
An online master's in school counseling leads most directly to work as a school counselor, an occupation the Bureau of Labor Statistics profiles in its Occupational Outlook Handbook as school and career counselors and advisors. The handbook says nearly all states and the District of Columbia require a master's degree for the job.
The work changes with the grade level: elementary counselors build social and academic skills, middle school counselors support students through difficulties at school or home, and high school counselors help with class choices and plans after graduation. The licensure guide by state lists each state's education agency.
How Much Do Jobs Tied to an Online Master's in School Counseling Pay?
Jobs tied to an online master's in school counseling pay a median of $64,330 a year in the closest federal occupation, Educational, Guidance, and Career Counselors and Advisors, in May 2025. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 353,310 workers in that occupation, and the lowest-paid tenth earn $45,020 or less while the highest-paid tenth earn $104,770 or more.
The Bureau's Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for this occupation covers projected growth, entry requirements and typical duties.
These are national wages for the occupation as a whole, not what a master's graduate earns, so a district's salary schedule or an employer's own pay scale is the figure to plan on.
How Should You Choose an Online School Counseling Master's Program?
To choose an online school counseling master's program, check for CACREP accreditation and your state's education agency first, then compare how each school handles field placement. Both the University of Denver and Fort Hays State report CACREP accreditation, and the CACREP directory lets you search accredited programs by state.
Next, ask for the licensure determination for your state in writing, confirm which grade band the credential covers, and ask who approves your internship site. The ranking above sorts on federal degree counts and tuition, so those questions are yours to settle with the school.
How Do You Become a School Counselor With an Online Master's Degree?
You become a school counselor with an online master's degree by working from the licensing state's rules to the program and then to your field site.
- Read your state's school counselor rules. Find the credential your state education agency issues to school counselors, and note its degree, field-hour, teaching-experience and exam requirements.
- Pick a CACREP-accredited program. Choose a school counseling master's with CACREP accreditation, and ask the school for its licensure determination for your state in writing before you apply.
- Secure a school placement. Work with the program's field team to find a school near you for the practicum and internship, and confirm who supervises you on site.
- Finish the courses and field hours. Complete the online coursework and supervised hours, logging your hours and direct work with students.
- Pass the exam and apply. Take the test your state requires, then send your transcript and the program's recommendation to the state agency.
