An online master's in curriculum and instruction is a graduate degree for educators who want a say in what gets taught and how, studied through web-based courses while you keep working in your own school. Many programs are aimed at working teachers, so the degree tends to deepen a career more often than it starts one.
Three questions decide whether a program fits. Does it end in a degree only, or in a credential your state recognizes? Which concentration matches your classroom or your next role? And what does the school put in writing about your state before you enroll?

How We Rank
Every eligible program is scored out of 100. Each figure becomes a percentile against the 150 ranked programs, and the percentiles are weighted as below. The methodology page explains each choice.
- Degrees awarded: 50%. Master's degrees the program conferred in the latest reported year, counted up to 50. Past 50 a year a program is clearly established and more volume adds nothing.
- Out-of-state tuition and fees: 50%. The university's graduate tuition plus required fees for a full-time year, out-of-state rate, 2023-24. Lower cost scores higher.
Reading the cards. Degrees awarded is the program's own count for the latest year reported to IPEDS, counted up to 50 for the score. Each tuition figure on a curriculum and instruction card is the university's graduate charge for a full-time year, read from IPEDS Institutional Characteristics, 2023-24. It is not a per-credit price or an online-only rate, so ask the program for its own.
Source: federal IPEDS records, read October 6, 2026. Tuition and fees are 2023-24. Scores are our own.
How Many Online Master's Programs in Curriculum and Instruction Are There?
There are 185 fully online master's programs in curriculum and instruction, out of 374 on federal record, and 150 of them are ranked above. A program counts as fully online when the school's own description of it says the whole degree can be completed at a distance, in line with the federal definition of an exclusively distance education program. In curriculum and instruction, a required campus residency makes a program hybrid here, even when most of the coursework is online, while a student teaching or practicum placement near home does not.
What Does an Online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction Cost?
An online master's in curriculum and instruction costs from $4,560 to $45,034 a year out of state in graduate tuition and required fees across the 150 ranked programs, with a median of $15,611. In state the median is $10,952. These are each university's annual graduate charge from IPEDS Institutional Characteristics, 2023-24 rather than a per-credit price or an online-only rate, so a curriculum and instruction program's own price page is the figure to plan on.
What Does an Online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction Cover?
An online master's in curriculum and instruction covers how learning goals are set, how lessons and assessments are designed to meet them, and how teachers judge whether students learned. Emporia State University's online Master of Science in curriculum and instruction divides into PreK-12 concentrations in curriculum leadership, effective practitioner, and instructional coach and teacher leader.
Other programs sort the field by subject. Louisiana State University Shreveport's online Master of Education offers a general track and concentrations in education technology, English as a second language, reading and literacy, STEM, urban education and special education leadership. The concentration list says more than the degree name. As a yardstick, CAEP's advanced-level standards include content and pedagogical knowledge and clinical partnerships with local schools, both worth looking for in a syllabus.
How Long Does an Online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction Take?
An online master's in curriculum and instruction takes about a year at the fastest published pace and longer at a part-time one. Emporia State lists 33 credit hours that can be finished in as few as 12 months through 7-week asynchronous courses, and Louisiana State University Shreveport lists 30 credit hours in approximately 12 months.
Those are fast tracks for a heavy course load. A teacher who takes one course a term spreads the same credits over many more terms, so ask each school how long part-time students actually take and how many transfer credits it accepts. Emporia State accepts up to nine.
Does an Online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction Lead to a Teaching License?
An online master's in curriculum and instruction usually does not lead to a teaching license by itself, and Louisiana State University Shreveport says its degrees do not lead directly to teacher certification. The credential it supports is an advanced one, such as a district pay step or an endorsement your state offers.
On that last point, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that instructional coordinators in public schools may be required to have a teaching license or an education administrator license. If you need a first license, a master's of arts in teaching or another program with a named licensure track fits better. Applied work happens where you already are: Emporia State's coach concentration describes an embedded practicum at your own school.
How Do State Authorization and Licensure Disclosures Apply to Online Curriculum and Instruction Students?
State authorization and licensure disclosures apply to online curriculum and instruction students whenever a program is designed to meet a licensure requirement, or is marketed that way. 34 CFR 668.43 has the school list the states where it has determined the program does and does not meet those requirements, and tell applicants directly in writing before they enroll when it does not or has not made a determination, or within 14 calendar days if it later finds that a program falls short in your state.
The school works out your state with its own consistent procedure and updates it when you report a move. NC-SARA states that it does not address licensing board approval for programs in fields such as teacher education. A general degree may carry no disclosure for your state, so ask in writing whether the program counts toward the endorsement, coaching role or administrator license you have in mind.
What Else Affects the Price of an Online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction?
The price of an online master's in curriculum and instruction depends on the per-credit rate, the credit total, any transfer credit and whether the school charges one rate to every state. Emporia State quotes $343 per credit, the same for in-state and out-of-state students, and a total of $11,319 with fees for its 33 credits.
Then weigh what the degree returns. In the federal teacher survey tables, average base salary for public school teachers is higher for those holding a master's than for those holding a bachelor's. Check your district's salary schedule for whether this degree earns a step, and whether the schedule asks for coursework related to your assignment.
What Jobs Does an Online Curriculum Master's Lead To?
An online curriculum master's leads most directly to work as an instructional coordinator, the occupation the Bureau of Labor Statistics profiles in its Occupational Outlook Handbook. The handbook names a master's in curriculum and instruction as a qualifying degree and expects several years of experience as a teacher or instructional leader on top of it.
Titles vary by district. Louisiana State University Shreveport lists instructional coordinator, educational consultant and academic director among graduate paths, and Emporia State points its concentrations at curriculum leadership and instructional coaching. Your state decides which roles need a license, and the licensure guide by state links each agency.
How Much Do Jobs Tied to an Online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction Pay?
Jobs tied to an online master's in curriculum and instruction pay a median of $77,440 a year in the closest federal occupation, Instructional Coordinators, in May 2025. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 227,760 workers in that occupation, and the lowest-paid tenth earn $47,980 or less while the highest-paid tenth earn $121,670 or more.
The Bureau's Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for this occupation covers projected growth, entry requirements and typical duties.
These are national wages for the occupation as a whole, not what a master's graduate earns, so a district's salary schedule or an employer's own pay scale is the figure to plan on.
How Should You Choose a Curriculum and Instruction Program to Study Online?
To choose a curriculum and instruction program to study online, start from the role you want, match it to a concentration, then check accreditation, the practicum arrangement and the licensure disclosure. Emporia State reports accreditation from CAEP and from the Higher Learning Commission, and you can confirm any school's accreditors in the Department of Education's accreditation database.
Then compare what changes your week: asynchronous courses or set meeting times, how long each course runs, the per-credit price, and whether the program asks for a standardized test. The ranking above sorts programs on federal degree counts and tuition, so these are the details you confirm with each school.
How Do You Earn an Online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction While Teaching?
You earn an online master's in curriculum and instruction while teaching by starting with the role you want and your state's rules for it, then letting the program and its concentration follow.
- Name the role you want next. Decide whether you are aiming at coaching, curriculum leadership, a subject specialty or stronger classroom practice, because the concentration and the practicum follow from that choice.
- Check your license and your state's rules. Confirm you hold the license a program expects, and learn whether your state or district requires a specific credential for the coach, coordinator or pay step you want.
- Get the licensure statement in writing. Ask each school what it has determined about your state and whether the degree counts toward an endorsement or administrator license, then keep the reply.
- Plan the applied work in your own school. Ask how practicum hours or action-research projects are completed, who supervises you, and whether your principal must approve the work.
- Finish and take the credential to your district. Complete the coursework, send transcripts for a salary-schedule review, and file with your state agency if an endorsement or administrator license is the goal.
