An online master's in elementary education is really two degrees sold under one name. One is a licensure track for career changers whose bachelor's is in another field, pairing online coursework with a full-time student teaching term in a school near home. The other is an advanced degree for teachers who already hold a license, built to deepen classroom practice and sometimes to lift a certificate to a higher tier.
Which one you need settles most of the rest: how long you study, whether your paycheck pauses, and what your state will accept afterward. The sections below follow that split, from the coursework and student teaching to the rules that reach students who live far from the school.

How We Rank
Every eligible program is scored out of 100. Each figure becomes a percentile against the 83 ranked programs, and the percentiles are weighted as below. The methodology page explains each choice.
- Degrees awarded: 50%. Master's degrees the program conferred in the latest reported year, counted up to 50. Past 50 a year a program is clearly established and more volume adds nothing.
- Out-of-state tuition and fees: 50%. The university's graduate tuition plus required fees for a full-time year, out-of-state rate, 2023-24. Lower cost scores higher.
Reading the cards. Degrees awarded is the program's own count for the latest year reported to IPEDS, counted up to 50 for the score. Each tuition figure on an elementary education card is the university's graduate charge for a full-time year, read from IPEDS Institutional Characteristics, 2023-24. It is not a per-credit price or an online-only rate, so ask the program for its own.
Source: federal IPEDS records, read October 6, 2026. Tuition and fees are 2023-24. Scores are our own.
How Many Online Master's Programs in Elementary Education Are There?
There are 110 fully online master's programs in elementary education, out of 302 on federal record, and 83 of them are ranked above. A program counts as fully online when the school's own description of it says the whole degree can be completed at a distance, in line with the federal definition of an exclusively distance education program. In elementary education, a required campus residency makes a program hybrid here, even when most of the coursework is online, while a student teaching or practicum placement near home does not.
What Does an Online Master's in Elementary Education Cost?
An online master's in elementary education costs from $4,560 to $45,640 a year out of state in graduate tuition and required fees across the 83 ranked programs, with a median of $17,460. In state the median is $11,700. These are each university's annual graduate charge from IPEDS Institutional Characteristics, 2023-24 rather than a per-credit price or an online-only rate, so a elementary education program's own price page is the figure to plan on.
What Does an Online Master's in Elementary Education Cover?
An online master's in elementary education covers the subjects a generalist teacher handles each day, plus the research habits that separate a graduate degree from a license course. Worcester State University's online Master of Education in elementary education lists 12 required courses, among them action research methodology, technology and literacy, mathematics and science instruction, social studies curriculum and inclusive classroom strategies, and it closes with a graduate portfolio.
Degrees built for career changers add teaching methods, student teaching and field experience, so read the full course list against your goal.
How Long Does an Online Master's in Elementary Education Take?
An online master's in elementary education takes as little as a year for a working teacher and longer for a track that ends in a license. Mercer University says students may complete its Advanced Teacher program in 12 to 16 months, in eight-week and 16-week terms.
Licensure tracks run longer. Kansas State University's online Master of Arts in Teaching totals 31 credits that most students finish in one to two years. Fitchburg State University's 39-credit initial-license program can be completed in as few as two and a half years, with six years allowed.
Does an Online Master's in Elementary Education Lead to a Teaching License?
An online master's in elementary education leads to a first teaching license only when it is built as an initial-licensure track, and the title does not say which kind you are looking at. Fitchburg State's Master of Education leads to an initial license in elementary education for grades 1 to 6, while Worcester State's Master of Education does not lead to initial licensure and lets a teacher who already holds a Massachusetts initial license self-petition for a professional license.
Other states attach the degree to a certificate tier. Mercer reports that graduates become eligible to upgrade to a level 5 certificate from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
Where Do Online Elementary Teacher Candidates Do Their Student Teaching?
Online elementary teacher candidates do their student teaching in a school near where they live, because a classroom cannot be delivered over a screen. Kansas State says its field experiences take place in accredited schools near where you currently live, and its final internship is 12 weeks of full-time student teaching during which students cannot keep full-time employment.
Plan for that term as an income gap. The Occupational Outlook Handbook describes student teaching with a mentor teacher as a standard part of teacher preparation, so ask any licensure program who finds the host school and who supervises you.
Will an Online Master's in Elementary Education Meet Your State's Licensure Rules?
An online master's in elementary education meets your state's licensure rules only if the school has decided it does for the state where you live, and federal regulation puts that decision on record. 34 CFR 668.43 requires a list of states where a licensure program does and does not meet requirements, notice to enrolled students within 14 days if that changes, and a location record that updates when you formally tell the school you have moved.
That last rule matters if you relocate mid-program. NC-SARA states that its interstate agreement does not address licensing board approval for teacher education, so your state agency has the final word.
What Costs Come With an Online Master's in Elementary Education Besides Tuition?
The costs that come with an online master's in elementary education besides tuition are per-credit fees, licensure steps and lost income during student teaching. Fitchburg State's 2026-27 schedule lists tuition of $195 per credit, mandatory fees of $152 per credit and a $58 per credit online program fee for specified programs.
Worcester State's program page lists its advanced degree at $409 per credit hour. The annual figures above describe a full-time year, so use a per-credit price to cost a part-time plan, and add the background check and general teaching test the Occupational Outlook Handbook lists among licensing requirements.
What Jobs Can an Elementary Teacher Get With an Online Master's Degree?
An elementary teacher with an online master's degree works most directly as a kindergarten or elementary school teacher, an occupation whose entry requirement is a bachelor's degree and a license rather than a graduate degree. The Occupational Outlook Handbook says public school teachers must be licensed or certified in the grade level they teach, and most follow a 10-month school year.
For a career changer, the master's is the route in. For a licensed teacher it is an advancement step whose value depends on your district, so read its published salary schedule first. Our elementary teacher career guide and licensure guide by state cover the role and each agency.
How Much Do Jobs Tied to an Online Master's in Elementary Education Pay?
Jobs tied to an online master's in elementary education pay a median of $63,970 a year in the closest federal occupation, Elementary School Teachers, Except Special Education, in May 2025. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 1,388,390 workers in that occupation, and the lowest-paid tenth earn $47,960 or less while the highest-paid tenth earn $104,340 or more.
The Bureau's Occupational Outlook Handbook projects employment in this occupation to shrink 2% from 2024 to 2034, with about 103,800 openings a year.
These are national wages for the occupation as a whole, not what a master's graduate earns, so a district's salary schedule or an employer's own pay scale is the figure to plan on.
How Should You Choose an Online Program to Become an Elementary Teacher?
To choose an online program to become an elementary teacher, first decide whether you need a first license or an advanced credential, then confirm that your state approves the program and that its educator preparation is accredited. The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation accredits providers of P-12 educator preparation, and the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation is a second accreditor, and Fitchburg State's initial-license program has full accreditation from it through December 31, 2030.
Then compare what accreditation leaves open: whether the school names your state in its licensure disclosure, who arranges student teaching and what each credit costs.
How Do You Earn an Elementary Teaching License Through an Online Master's Degree?
You earn an elementary teaching license through an online master's degree by working from your state's rules toward a program, and keeping the school's written answer about your state.
- Pick the track that fits you. Choose an initial-licensure program if your bachelor's is in another field, or an advanced degree if you already hold a license and want deeper practice or a higher certificate.
- Read your state's elementary requirements. Find the grade band, content tests and added coursework your state's elementary license requires, on the state education agency's own pages.
- Get the licensure disclosure in writing. Ask each school whether the program meets licensure requirements where you live, and save the reply before you pay a deposit.
- Line up your student teaching term. Confirm who finds the host school near you, who supervises, and how you will cover the weeks when full-time classroom work replaces your job.
- Pass the tests and apply. Finish the internship, pass the required licensure tests, then send transcripts and the program's recommendation to the state agency.
